Causes of Shell Fish Allergy
Shellfish allergy is most commonly found in adults in West. About two percent of adults have a shellfish allergy and quarter percent of adults are children who are affected with shellfish allergy. Shellfish allergy is more common in adults than in children and is likely to develop in adulthood rather in childhood and are lifelong allergies. Allergy is mainly caused due to some protein in shellfish and in this case it is tropomyosin. This protein is found in all shellfish but some people have exceptions like some people who have allergy with shrimps can easily eat lobsters and person allergic to one shellfish have chance of about 75% of being allergic to another shellfish, but some people are really lucky and some people can even get to see doctor after a great dinner.
Indication of Allergy-Symptoms
Symptoms of shellfish are most likely to occur as normal allergies indications within couple of minutes. Family members of mollusks are dangerous than crustaceans as some members of mollusks like clams and oysters contain very dangerous chemical called saxitoxin and can cause vomiting, nausea, burning in mouth or extremities and this is called shellfish poisoning which can be even fatal. Another life threatening reaction is the anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis causes low blood pressure, breathing problems, tighten of neck and unconsciousness. These indications are all very dangerous and the person should seek medical attention in this case if he accidentally takes shellfish or its related product. The doctor will provide with an injection of epinephrine auto injector and the person should stay in the medical center for about 30 minutes.
Living with Shell Fish Allergy
People with this shell fish are normally advised to stay out of seafood restaurants. Even if you ordered something else, the restaurant may not change the oil which they used for making shellfish as other foods. Allergic people should be aware of cross contamination i.e. to make sure that different utensils and work surfaces are used to cook food. Further, different medicines, cosmetics and creams use shellfish as an ingredient. Allergic should read labels before purchasing any such product.
